RPTI AWARDS - 7th February 2008
Sherwood Energy Village has won the Royal Town Planning Institute’s Silver Jubilee Cup, the top prize in planning. The award was presented by Baroness Andrews, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, at a ceremony in London’s Hilton Hotel earlier today. Sherwood Energy Village won from amongst a broad range of projects helping to tackle climate change. The award shows how serious planners are about putting the environment first.
Baroness Andrews said: “Sherwood Energy Village is a deserving winner and outstanding example of citizens taking their community and the environment seriously. Housing and planning has a major role to play in tackling climate change – from 2016 all new homes will be zero carbon - and by giving this award the Royal Town Planning Institute is recognising the role strong communities play in tackling climate change and urban renewal.”
Mike Ash, chief awards judge said: “The Royal Town Planning Institute’s Silver Jubilee Cup recognises the very best in planning. Sherwood Energy Village is remarkable in that it shows how a strongly motivated community can take the lead in transforming not just the physical, but the economic and social fortunes of their town.”
East Midlands regional minister Phil Hope said: "This fantastic achievement by Sherwood Energy Village highlights the talent, ambition and excellence which have been harnessed within the East Midlands region.
"The RTPI has awarded its highest national honour to the former coal mining town community of Ollerton which just 14 years ago, appeared to be facing a bleak future. The spirit with which they faced up to the impact of job losses, while at the same time wanting to produce a truly green environment to repair the damage of the coal mining, is inspirational.
"I commend all those partners who have worked so hard and successfully to regenerate the area through skills improvement, sustainable housing and business growth."

The Energy Village has proved to be a pioneering force, a catalyst for change, in terms of regeneration - not least that it has been driven by community aspirations. SEV has hosted many visits from national and international delegations and it is hoped that the ideas, inspiration and determination is translated to other communities across the world for a more sustainable future.
We don't have the blueprint - who has? But if the people of this world don't start somewhere then how can issues of global warming, waste and exploitation of resources be addressed? Someone once said that a journey starts with a single step. Let's take the step.
PLASTIC SOUP ...
The Independent newspaper reported on 5th February that a plastic soup of rubbish, the size of the United States, has engulfed in the Pacific Ocean and is set to double in the next ten years.
Stretching from Hawaii to Japan this ocean of plastic debris causes untold damage for marine life and eco-systems. Albatross chicks have been found dead having ingested such everyday items such as plastic bags, up to 1,603 everyday human waste items made of plastic. We won't go into details here - it's too unpleasant. So it is up to all of us to think and act on these issues - before it's too late.

Make It Right Brad Pitt ...
Well, those of the female persuasion in the SEV offices might not doubt he could do otherwise of course. Recent news articles have covered the fact that Brad Pitt is personally steering through the development of 150 low cost, energy efficient houses in New Orleans to replace some of those lost to Hurricane Katrina. He was fed up that after two years, there seemed to be a lack of action and has taken matters into his own hands; working with architects and others to design storm/flood resistant affordable housing and ensuring that consultation has taken place.
His vision is that new home dwellers will not get “crap materials that give your kids asthma and increase health bills. They are not getting the cheap appliances that run up your bills and keep the burden on you...”
Brad Pitt has established a foundation called Make It Right and is actively campaigning for sponsorship of the development in the area of New Orleans hardest hit by Katrina. Good luck to him. Information from The Independent 4.12.07.

"Community Renewable Energy:From Brown Rice To Bluetooth":
Renewable energy and micro-generation offers new opportunities for local communities to be involved in developing solutions to local energy issues, as well as highlighting what local people can do to tackle climate change in terms of energy usage and microgeneration.
Over 55 people from across the East Midlands, and from voluntary/community organisations, public sector bodies, as well as private sector businesses participated in this East Midlands Regional Assembly and Forestry Commission funded event. Delegates were able to gain information about current activities and available support for the development of community based renewable energy schemes, as well as networking, and discussing concerns, solutions, ideas and their collective experiences of being involved in community based renewable energy projects.

Speakers included major East Midlands funders such as The Big Lottery, and Coalfields’ Regeneration Trust explained how their funding programmes could be used to support projects involving renewable energy and sustainable buildings. The event also heard about the recently launched Low Carbon Buildings Programme from the specialist energy project support agency, Community Action For Energy. The Social Enterprise East Midlands speaker explored the non-grant project finance options available, whilst Tony Jackson from Jackson Design Associates spoke about the methodology and value of integrating sustainable design principles within community building development.
As well as the formal structure to the day, event delegates were able to browse the visual displays that many of the event participants had brought along to the event. This East Midlands event is the latest example of SEV organising a relevant and accessible information and networking event which gets to the heart of a subject, which in this case was community based renewable energy.
